ABOUT ME

My name is Montee Ball, former Wisconsin Badger and NFL Denver Broncos Running Back. I am an entrepreneur and public speaker advocating for addiction awareness.  Now that you know what I do, I would like to tell you who I am. I am a brother, wedged between two lovely sisters – who have supported me each step of the way.  I am a father, loved by a beautiful baby boy named Maverick, who will come to know how he is an important piece to my road to recovery!  Calling myself a recovering alcoholic is something I take great pride in, and because of that I am now living in better days.  But, it took a significant amount of self-reflection and pride swallowing to get to this point.
MY ADDICTION DEVELOPED DURING MY YEARS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON. I DEVELOPED A HABIT OF CONSUMING ALCOHOL UNTIL I HIT A HIGH, KNOWN AS “BLACKING OUT.” IN THAT STATE OF MIND, I FELT SO COMFORTABLE AND SECURE—YET OTHERS WOULD SAY THAT I WAS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PERSON. ONE THAT, AT TIMES, THEY DID NOT ACCEPT. ALCOHOL WAS MY WAY OF ESCAPING FROM THE SOCIAL ANXIETY ATTACKS I FACED EVERY SINGLE DAY. THIS HABIT OF DRINKING FOR COMFORT WAS PACKAGED TIGHTLY IN MY SUITCASE, AND ONCE I STEPPED FOOT IN DENVER, IT ONLY GREW. BEING YOUNG, WITH EVERYTHING AT MY FINGERTIPS, ONLY SHOVED ME DEEPER DOWN A DARK AND LONELY PATH. A PATH WHERE I WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THOSE WHO SCATTERED ONCE THE “FAME” ENDED. A PATH THAT LED ME STRAIGHT INTO A JAIL CELL–TWICE.

Although I fully believe that those in recovery must do it for themselves, my son Maverick provided me with a powerful push in the right direction. Once he was born, my entire life changed. I must remain sober, for myself, so that my son can experience a healthy relationship with his father. So, I have found my why. Hopefully with my guidance and passion for raising awareness, YOU can find your why—and continue the fight!
